Here I was, listening to this double live album on a friend’s stereo, and hours later it came to life on stage before my very eyes.Īs was to become the norm for Rush, every fifth album tended to be a live document of the four albums preceding it, so Exit…Stage Left is very much a reflection of the period when Rush were at their prog rock zenith, with lengthy compositions and concept albums.
So it was almost akin to that moment in The Wizard of Oz when Dorothy opens the door in her black and white cabin and suddenly enters a world of colour.
Exit…Stage Left was recorded, for the main part, on Rush’s Moving Pictures tour, but by the time the album had been mixed and released, the band were only just beginning the UK leg of the same tour! I can clearly recall when I first heard this live album – it was literally hours before I would be seeing the band for real, playing exactly the same songs. Flawed live album recorded during one of the most popular periods of Rush’s career gets an overdue makeover that finally does justice to the music recorded on those nights.
